Facial Acupuncture: Back in Fashion
Way back in 2003, my clinic suddenly became incredibly busy with bookings for Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture treatments. I, along with two colleagues, had just been featured in a National Post article about this “new method” for healthier, more vibrant skin.
That article came about after I reached out to a local journalist who was covering a tragic story about a woman who had died during facial cosmetic surgery. I asked whether she had ever heard of a gentler alternative — something that could support the appearance of the face without the invasiveness of surgery.
She had, but it hadn’t occurred to her to write about it.
As soon as her new article came out the phone started ringing. I was booked solid for months.
Why I’m Writing About This Again
Now, more than 20 years later, facial acupuncture is becoming popular again and I’m being asked whether I offer Cosmetic Acupuncture –or– Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, and I’m noticing the same confusion that existed back in 2003.
Yes, I offer treatments in both methods! In fact, I often blend them, depending on your goals and how you want to look and feel.
One approach works from the whole body, the other targets specific facial concerns. Many of my clients find it a deeply relaxing, holistic way to care for their entire body — not just their face — helping them feel calmer, more balanced, and visibly more vibrant.
But there are further differences between Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture and Cosmetic Acupuncture. Below is a short guide that explains what to expect — and which facial acupuncture treatment might suit you.

Comparing Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture and Cosmetic Acupuncture
In this article I am going to compare and contrast the two main approaches to facial acupuncture: Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture and Cosmetic Acupuncture, starting with an overview of each.
(Buckle in, this one’s longer than normal!)
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture Overview
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu takes a whole‑body approach. It views the face as a reflection of overall health. Skin tone, muscle tension, and general brightness can mirror what’s happening internally — stress levels, digestion, sleep patterns, circulation, and hormones all play a role.
This approach works from the inside out, supporting overall well‑being so the face naturally reflects a calmer, more balanced internal state.
During this treatment, the aim is to support vitality, improve circulation, ease jaw and facial tension, and help the system function more smoothly.
As the body relaxes and moves toward balance, the face naturally softens, brightens, and takes on a more vibrant appearance. The Shiatsu component adds hands‑on work that releases tight muscles, encourages lymphatic flow, and brings the nervous system into a deeply restorative state.
Cosmetic Acupuncture Overview
Cosmetic Acupuncture, in contrast, is more targeted and aesthetics‑focused. This method involves placing a greater number of very fine needles directly into specific areas of the face to stimulate collagen production, improve elasticity, lift areas that may be sagging, and smooth fine lines.
This approach works from the outside in, focusing on specific aesthetic concerns through precise, localized stimulation to lift, firm, and smooth. It is a more localized, cosmetically oriented style of treatment and often produces quicker visible results in particular areas of concern.
Both treatments suit anyone interested in maintaining a youthful vitality in the face, not only those seeking cosmetic change.
The Experience of Each Treatment
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu sessions tend to feel extremely relaxing. Fewer needles are used, and the hands‑on shiatsu work helps create a sense of being grounded and rebalanced.
Many people describe this approach as a full‑body reset, especially if they carry tension in the jaw, forehead, neck, or shoulders.
The result is often a calm, settled feeling that supports a more vibrant sense of well‑being.
Cosmetic Acupuncture feels a little different. Because it uses more needles placed directly on the face, you may notice gentle micro‑stimulation or light tingling.
The treatment is focused and detailed, designed to create noticeable changes in tone, firmness, and contour. While it is not uncomfortable, it is more locally stimulating than the rejuvenation approach.
Treatment Timing and Progression
With Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu, most people begin with weekly sessions. A series of 6-12 treatments is common, giving the body and skin time to respond gradually. After this initial phase, some people return seasonally, or whenever they feel their system — and their complexion — could benefit from a gentle reset.
Cosmetic Acupuncture generally follows a more structured plan, often weekly or even twice weekly for 10-15 treatments. Because the method is more intensive, maintenance treatments are usually scheduled every few weeks to help keep the results consistent.
Results You May Notice
The results of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu often include a brighter complexion, softer lines caused by muscle tension, improved comfort in the jaw and facial muscles, and better sleep.
Many people report feeling more balanced, less stressed, and more energized overall. The cosmetic changes tend to be subtle and natural, emerging as the whole body is supported, and often giving the face a more vibrant and rested quality.
Cosmetic Acupuncture tends to create more visibly localized changes. Many people notice firmer skin tone, more lifted contours in the cheeks or jawline, and smoother fine lines in specific areas.
After a series of treatments, the face often appears more defined and sculpted.
Choosing the Right Approach for YOU
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu is a wonderful option if you’re looking for both wellness and cosmetic benefits. It’s well suited if you carry tension in the face or neck, prefer a deeply relaxing treatment, or value a holistic approach that supports the whole system. It also appeals to those who prefer gradual, natural improvements that unfold as the body restores balance.
However…
Cosmetic Acupuncture may be a better fit if you have specific aesthetic goals, feel comfortable with multiple facial needles, and are looking for more immediate visible changes in lift, firmness, or contour.
Long or Short-Term Results?
For many people, a regular program of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture + Shiatsu is the ideal foundation. This approach supports a softer, more supple complexion and a healthy glow over time.
However, if you have an upcoming event and want to look especially radiant, we can shift the focus and spend more time on targeted Cosmetic Acupuncture work.
Again, the approach is determined by your goals (and approaches are often blended anyway!). As your needs change, the balance between these approaches can be adjusted so your care continues to support both appearance and overall well‑being.
If You Made it This Far, Thanks!
I hope this helps you to understand how we can approach facial acupuncture.
Ultimately, the best approach is the one that helps you feel good in your skin — supported, relaxed, and naturally vibrant. Together we will figure this out!

Closing Reflection
Think of vibrancy as something that begins inside — good sleep, steady digestion, less stress — but shows first on the face. A relaxed jaw, a genuine smile, even a short laugh with a friend can make you look and feel more vibrant than any quick fix.
Why not try two simple things this week to help your being feel more relaxed and vibrant:
- Notice one small habit that drains you (late nights, clenched jaw, skipped meals) and replace it with a small repair (an earlier bedtime, a brief jaw‑release pause, or a nourishing snack)
- Choose one short, positive action that brings connection or ease (take a slow walk, enjoy a warm drink, or book a session to reset)
Vibrancy really does start within — the face just tells the story.
Stay golden,
