So What’s This All About?
This newsletter is the start of a new approach to reaching out to you, of furthering our relationship together. I hope that by sending a single monthly newsletter based around a central theme we will be able to keep more fully connected.
It seems appropriate that the theme for our first issue is Trust. For those of you who are new to my practice, you may have realized that one the cornerstones of my work revolves around building strong and connected therapeutic relationships.
Trust is essential to this.
Trust is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship.
Trust is key when creating and holding the space for change.
Let’s explore what that means.
The Beautiful Power of Trust Between Practitioner & Patient
When I started my Zen Shiatsu training, I was told that the most important part of the treatment was not the number of techniques I mastered, or the number of meridians, muscles, or acupuncture points I could remember.
I was told that the most important part of treatment is the connection that exists between the practitioner and the patient.
At that time – I was 22 – I thought this was a bunch of hocus pocus guff.
Back then, I already knew all of the Traditional Eastern Medical Theory by heart… However, it took some time of consistent, uphill work for me to grow, develop, and move through the Theoretical and Technical to cultivate this deeper, essential part of practice.
And now this connection, this trust, is the beating heart of all that I do.
When you choose to lie down on my treatment mat, or when you choose to ask about a herbal remedy you are placing your trust in me.
You are trusting that not only do I have technical and professional skill and expertise, but also that I have your best interests at heart. You allow yourself to be vulnerable, and are trusting that I will do my best to look after you.
(Even while I write to you about this, I still feel that I do not have words to adequately express the feelings I have around this. But I will try!)
I have worked with some of you for over 20 years. 20 years! The gratitude, joy, honour, and duty that I feel for this trust that you have placed in me is immense. Whether you are new to my practice or one of those who have been with me for the past decades, these feelings are present during every treatment. I do not take this for granted.
By putting your trust in me, you also allow me to do the sort of work that I do best. You trust that what I am doing is not “crazy” or “woo woo.”
Your trust allows for this work to happen on many levels, not just the physical.
(By now you probably know that I am not the sort of practitioner who works exclusively with your physical body.)
I am very concerned with the state and wellbeing of your energetic body, as well as your soul and spirit.
To work with these parts of you, a deep level of trust must be established and maintained. You make this opportunity possible, which in turn allows me to work with every layer of your complaint or situation.
It is your trust that allows my practice and skill to flourish, and for good therapeutic outcomes to occur.
I sincerely thank you for this.

Kampo Corner: Q&A with Daniel Adler
I am generally known as a “Zen Shiatsu Practitioner”. But I am also deeply passionate about Herbs and Herbal Remedies , and practice the Japanese Herbal System known as “Kampo”. In this section, I hope to offer some insight and education into this part of my practice. Let‘s dig in!
Q: Why bother consulting a Kampo practitioner when you can buy herbal formulas on Amazon?
The answer is simple: Amazon cannot diagnose you, cannot make a correct pattern identification according to your specific condition and situation, and cannot arrive at the appropriate matching formula.
Amazon has not spent 20+ years learning about people and individuals and their unique patterns. Amazon cannot look at your tongue, feel your pulse, or palpate your abdomen to get living evidence from your body about your condition.
So while Amazon can lead you to a number of herbal remedies for headaches, for example, such as Yi Gan San or Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang or Ge Gen Tang (to name only 3), Amazon cannot distinguish which one of these may be right for you and under what circumstances.
Please don’t self diagnose. At the very least you may waste some money. Worse, you may make yourself feel quite unwell. Remember that Herbs are chemical: leave the diagnosis and prescription of Herbs to practitioners with experience and training.
“In Kampo, the relationship between practitioner and patient is like that of a gardener and a plant. Only through trust can the true nature of the illness be revealed and treated.”
– Shirota Toshihiko
Featured Article: What is Hara Diagnosis?
In this article I explain hara, an abdominal diagnosis method used during the assessment phase of my Zen Shiatsu and acupuncture treatments. Hara is an excellent example of how trust is key between practitioner and patient.

Closing Reflection
We are living in a world where simple, healing human connection and strong, deep relationships are being challenged and eroded.
When quick fixes are the norm, how much trust are you willing to place in the hands of someone who can see and treat you as a whole person?
